Watauga County runs on three calendars, not one

Most marketing advice assumes a business has one busy season. Boone has three, and they do not line up.

The student calendar. Around 21,800 students arrive in the middle of August and leave in early May. The town nearly empties over the winter holidays, dips hard at Fall Break, Thanksgiving and Spring Break, and swells again every fall Saturday when a 30,000-seat stadium fills up in a town of 19,000 people.

The tourism calendar. Leaf season, ski season and summer are three different customer sets with three different searches. Watauga County saw over half a billion dollars in visitor spending in 2024 and ranks in the top fifteen counties in the state for it.

The second-home calendar. Blowing Rock, Foscoe and the NC 105 corridor fill and empty on a schedule of their own, and those owners are often searching for a contractor from three hundred miles away.

A Google listing with one set of hours and one message all year is fighting all three of those at once.

WE KNOW THE ROADS

Where your customers actually are

King Street

US 421 through downtown Boone. Walkable retail and restaurants, heavy student and visitor foot traffic, and the address people picture when they think of Boone.

The Blowing Rock Road corridor

The big-box and chain retail side of town. Different customer, different search, and a lot of comparison shopping.

NC 105 toward Foscoe

The resort corridor out toward Linville. Outfitters, galleries, rentals and services for people who do not live here full time. Famous for backing up.

US 321 to Blowing Rock

Boutique Main Street, Tweetsie, Appalachian Ski Mtn and a tourism economy that has been running since long before the rest of it.

NC 194 to Valle Crucis

The Watauga River, the original Mast General Store, fly fishing and the wedding and event trade.

US 421 east to Deep Gap

Where the mountain drops toward Wilkes County. Deep Gap is the Parkway access, and it is the road we take to get to you.

SOMETHING THAT ACTUALLY CHANGED

Fiber finally reached the rest of the county

Why that matters to your business

Watauga County finished its fiber buildout in April 2025 — 160 miles of new construction, funded with $7.5 million from the county and built by Blue Ridge Energy and SkyLine and SkyBest, reaching more than 1,700 locations that had been unserved or underserved.

That is the honest explanation for something people are too polite to say out loud: a lot of well-run businesses out in the county have thin websites and neglected Google listings because until recently the connection would not support anything else.

The infrastructure caught up. Most of the businesses have not yet. That gap is the opportunity, and it will not stay open.

What we do first

WHO WE WORK WITH HERE

The Watauga County businesses this fits

Restaurants, bars and coffee shops

Accommodation and food service is the single largest employment sector in this county. It is also the most review-driven business there is.

Vacation rentals and property managers

Second-home owners searching from out of state. Your listing and your reviews are doing the selling before anyone calls.

Trades and home services

Freeze-thaw cycles, older housing, second homes sitting empty half the year and ongoing Helene repair work. Demand is steady and urgent.

Outfitters and guides

Fly shops, rafting, ski and board rental. Almost every customer is a visitor deciding this week, from a phone.

Real estate brokerages

A market where a high share of buyers are searching from somewhere else entirely, months before they arrive.

Venues and event businesses

Weddings booked a year out by people who found three options online and picked from photos and reviews.

A NOTE, BECAUSE IT MATTERS

Helene is still part of this market

We are not going to write about the High Country as though the last two years did not happen.

Six months after Helene, six Watauga County roads were still closed and 130 residential units in Boone had major damage. Tourism businesses went into that winter without the fall revenue they normally rely on, and the margins have been tight since.

We say that for one practical reason. When a page about Boone reads like it was written from a stock photo, people here notice, and it is usually the first sign that the business behind it is not local. When it acknowledges what actually happened, it reads like a neighbour.

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

Watauga County questions

Our office is in Purlear, in Wilkes County, about forty-five minutes east of Boone on US 421. Our founder graduated from Appalachian State in 2019 and spent those years in this town. Wilkes County is also one of the five counties App State counts in its own regional economic impact area, so this is genuinely the same regional economy.

Yes. Blowing Rock is a different market from Boone even though it is fifteen minutes away — older, more affluent, more seasonal, far more boutique. We write it as its own market.

Partly, and we will be honest about the limits. Nothing makes April into July. What it can do is make sure you capture more of the seasons you do have, keep your listing active through the quiet months so you are not starting from zero, and use the slow weeks to build the pages that pay in the busy ones.

Yes, and it changes what we target. Somebody in Charlotte searching “Boone cabin rental” still triggers a local result — it is just anchored to Boone rather than to where they are standing. That is a solvable problem and most of your competitors have not solved it.

$499 a month, cancel anytime. Websites are $637.50 one time plus $20 a month, and that $20 is free on any monthly plan. All of it is on the Plans page.

One to three months for most businesses. Google listing fixes move fastest. If you have a hard season coming, tell us the date and we will work backwards from it.

Regularly. Most meetings happen over Zoom or Google Meet, but Boone is forty-five minutes and a road we have driven a few hundred times.

Yes. Ashe County and Avery County both have their own pages, because they are genuinely different markets.
