A town that changes size with the weather
NC 184 is the way up, turning into Beech Mountain Parkway as it climbs, and from there the town runs on sixty odd miles of its own low traffic roads. At 5,506 feet it is the highest incorporated town east of the Rockies, and the full time population is a few hundred people against several thousand at the height of a good season.
Almost everything operating up here serves that swing. Lodging and vacation rentals. Property management, cleaning and maintenance.
